A Quote Is Priced by the Panel, Not by the Foot
A glass fabricator does not have a per-foot price. It has a per-panel price, driven by area, thickness, and treatment, and then a surcharge sheet for everything done to that panel afterward — holes, notches, edges, and rush. The per-linear-foot figure you see published is that per-panel number divided back out after the fact. It is a reporting convenience, not a pricing method.
That distinction is the whole article, because it means two jobs at identical linear footage can be different sizes of job.
Converting your run into panels
Glass railing panels run 36 to 72 inches wide, with 4 feet the most common width, and framed systems typically set posts 4 to 6 feet on center (Viewrail). Panels are separated by a gap of roughly 3/8 to 5/8 inch (Glass Railings Supply).

Now hold the footage constant and change the drawing.
Job A — 60 feet, straight, level, no corners. Fifteen panels, one size, one part. The fabricator cuts, tempers, and edges fifteen identical pieces. The setup happens once. The tempering oven loads efficiently. The installer sets the same panel fifteen times and gets faster at it.
Job B — 60 feet total: a 24-foot level run, two corners, a 16-foot stair rake, and a 20-foot return. Also fifteen panels. But nine of them are the repeated stock size and six are unique — two short fill panels where the corners break the module, and four raked panels, each a different parallelogram because each spans a different part of the slope.
Same linear footage. Same product. Not the same job.
What the uniqueness actually costs

The surcharge sheet is small. Tier 1 — the four that set which half of the range you land in

Architect notes
By the time a drawing is issued for pricing, drivers 1 through 4 and 8 through 9 are fixed. The specifier still holds 5, 6, 7, and 10 — which is to say, the specifier holds the panel schedule. A railing spec that names a mounting system and a finish but omits a panel schedule has left the largest controllable variable off the drawing. Issue the schedule with the spec and the returned quotes become comparable, because every bidder is pricing the same fifteen pieces instead of their own interpretation of sixty feet.

What this means for homeowners
Most of that table is already decided by the time anyone quotes you. You do not choose the wind load, you do not choose whether your deck is at grade or one storey up, and you did not choose where the stairs go. Both are researched, both are current, and they overlap across only a fifth of their combined span. The instinct is to treat one as wrong. Neither is.
It is a unit problem. A linear foot on a stair rake is not the same quantity of work as a linear foot on a level run, so a per-linear-foot figure that mixes both is averaging two different things — and which of the two dominates a publisher’s sample decides where its range lands.
On a level run, panels repeat. On a rake, they cannot. What a reader should do with it. If your project includes a stair, do not accept a blended per-foot price across the whole job. Ask for the level runs and the raked runs quoted separately, per panel. Glass is bought for the view. It is a sightline product, and the money buys transparency at a guard line where a timber or baluster system would have put pickets. Anyone selling a glass railing on lifecycle savings is selling a comparison that does not survive contact with a spreadsheet.
The claim that does survive is narrower, and it is the one worth making. Coastal — Atlantic, Gulf, Pacific
Salt air attacks fasteners and hardware before it touches a coating. Wind load is the driver that turns an aesthetic preference into a code obligation.
